Surti Locho is a famous street food from the city of Surat. It is a soft, steamed, spicy snack made mainly from gram flour (besan) and lentils, known for its loose, slightly messy texture—which is actually how it got its name.
In Gujarati, “locho” means “a mistake or mess.”
According to local stories, a cook in Surat once accidentally made a dish with the wrong batter consistency while preparing khaman. Instead of discarding it, he steamed it and served it with toppings—and people loved it. The “mistake” became a beloved snack.
